Score of my life in 2007

January – “Tell Me More” podcast
Its not quite music, but I started routinely listening to Tell Me More on NPR nearly every weekday night. It’s a thoughtful conversation on the issues that affect the minorities in our nation.

February – “Soda Shop” by Jay Brannan
One of the songs from the movie Shortbus, which I saw on campus. Jay is in the movie and the whole soundtrack was a great addition to my music library. If you have not seen the film I suggest renting it is a great watch though explicit throughout its entirety.

March – 3 gigs of SXSW
This was a mistake. SXSW offered one song from nearly every performer from the festival. At first I thought this would be a great way to find some new music but instead found it to be one very large daunting task with songs I did not know or like popping up in my shuffle. Recently I deleted all but a handful of the 3 gigs, most of which I never even listened to.

April – “Life In Cartoon Motion” by MIKA
The whole album is great! The poppy flavor with great dynamic song writing is sure to turn any rough day into a good day. If you ever have a chance I would search youtube for some live interviews where Mika shows off some of his classical training.

May – “King Without a Crown” By Matisyahu
Most have been reminiscing of my trip to Israel six months earlier. The live album by Matisyahu tittled “Live At Stubb’s” is full of energy and another great listen.

June – “Umbrella” by Riana
I probably have never really heard the whole song but it does remind me a lot of the summer taking the incoming freshmen around campus for orientation. Memories stem from that month that I will never forget. During that time I did nothing more then walk talk and sleep very little, it was great!

July – “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” by Doris Day
I was taking a class and bumming aroud enjoying the summer. The song speaks to me the simlicity of the summer and letting things flow. Which is exactly what I did. I biked around campus, stayed cool and sublet an apt for cheap.

August – “Coming Home” by John Legend
Going back a forth between home and school I seem to listen to the album, Once Again, that this song comes from. Probably because its one of the few CD’s in my car but it’s also great driving music, my thoughts drift around in its melodies.

October – “Once” by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová
Need I say more then see the movie and you will understand. You could almost classify the film as a musical.

November – “The World At Large” by Modest Mouse
This is easy, right at the end of the month I saw Modest Mouse play at the State in Kalamazoo. It was a sold out show and I managed to get in for free as a photographer for the Herald. I had never seen a show like this and it was a treat to see such great performance by a talented band.

December – “The Blower’s Daughter” by Damien Rice
Finals mean I create big long playlists with lots of singer song writers and electronic folk music. Damien Rice was a new addition to my library and really enjoyed the music. It’s good to study to and seems to have a deeper meaning that someday I may listen for.

Idea for post originated from a post by blogger Andy Budd.

Live Earth

Remember a little while back Live Earth, well here is a great interview with the guy who produced the television broadcast.  By the way he is a WMU alum too.
